Breath of Life Conference 2022

Sustainably scaling oxygen access in Uganda

FREO2 Foundation envisions a world where every child can breathe, live and thrive, our mission is to improve access to oxygen to save lives and reduce inequalities in health. Pneumonia remains the single largest infectious killer of babies and children worldwide, claiming the lives of over 800,000 children each year and is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Medical oxygen is a proven life saving intervention, included on WHO's essential medicines list and has been shown to reduce pneumonia mortality by up to 35%. However, oxygen treatment remains unavailable for many severely ill children admitted to hospitals in Uganda.

The 'Breath of Life: sustainably scaling oxygen access in Uganda' conference will bring oxygen partners, funders, clinicians, academics, innovators, government institutions and the Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH) together to address the need for increased access to reliable oxygen at the under-resourced periphery of Uganda's health services.

The conference will showcase the impact of FREO2’s TTS2 program (Transition to Scale). This work is proudly supported by Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) and is carefully aimed at reducing infant deaths in the lower levels of the health system.

In collaboration with Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) and with the support from the MOH, this program has equipped 20 health facilities with FREO2's novel oxygen technologies, upskilled over 500 healthcare workers in pulse oximetry and oxygen therapy delivery, and treated thousands of children diagnosed with hypoxia

Objectives: To demonstrate the impact of our TTS programs and thank our donors and partners for their tremendous support. We also hope to inspire new funding and partnership opportunities to reduce infant deaths from preventable hypoxic illnesses. With these partnerships, we plan to scale our affordable oxygen technologies and programs in low-resource health facilities across Uganda.

Program: We have created an exciting and dynamic conference program. This includes keynote sessions from FREO2 and BAMA, presentations from senior representatives of the Uganda MOH departments of Health Infrastructure Department and Maternal and Child Health, specialist breakout sessions and site visits. Attendees will have plenty of opportunities to meet with key supporters and stakeholders including: the Clinton Health Access Initiative, BAMA, GCC and Segal Family Foundation.

Outcomes: Building and strengthening relationships with partners and stakeholders in the oxygen space. The MOH acknowledges FREO2's medical oxygen systems and inspires confidence in FREO2 programs in remote and low-resource health facilities.
