About Us
FREO2 Foundation (FREO2) is a global non-profit focused on reducing child mortality from respiratory illnesses in low- and lower-middle-income countries. Our mission is to improve access to life-saving oxygen and reduce health inequalities.
Respiratory failure claims the lives of more than 1.6 million children under the age of five every year. This includes fatalities from pneumonia, birth asphyxia and preterm births. Despite the preventable nature of these deaths, children residing in low-resource settings face significant barriers to accessing life-saving treatment.
Medical oxygen is crucial in managing respiratory illnesses, yet many countries struggle with its shortage. It has been shown to significantly reduce pneumonia mortality by up to 35%. Traditional oxygen cylinders are extremely costly and hard to come by in remote areas, while commercial oxygen concentrators require regular maintenance and a constant energy supply. In many low resource health facilities, power outages are frequent and often deadly; a hypoxic child cannot survive beyond 7 minutes without a constant oxygen supply.
To combat this, we offer Oxygen as a Service (O2aaS) — a reliable, affordable, and accessible solution. O2aaS comprises innovative products ensuring an uninterrupted oxygen supply, clinical training for timely diagnosis and treatment, and technical training for sustainable maintenance and support.
We currently partner with remote healthcare facilities across three countries, Uganda, Tanzania and The Pacific. We work in under-resourced communities at the periphery of healthcare to ensure that oxygen reaches areas where its impact is most valued — a concept we term Maximising Oxygen Miles.
